Regulation Strategies Overview

If you know that you’re nervous system is very dysregulated or out of whack, I recommend you start your healing with a professional — whether that be a licensed mental health practitioner, licensed massage therapist, or somatic practitioner. You can most definitely heal your nervous system on your own (the body can heal what it creates), but sometimes our system is so overwhelmed, that a calming, guiding presence can be necessary to kick start the healing.

If you are already in treatment, or have been previously, and are looking for some more ideas to regulate your nervous system — this guide is for you!

I have learned the regulation strategies below from a variety of healers, including but not limited to, psychologists, social workers, massage therapists, somatic practitioners, acupuncturists, and physical therapists. They are somatic exercises because they involve your body. They also all have the capability to help you better tolerate emotions and/or help you move through difficult emotions. The only way to figure out which techniques work for you is to try them! The exercises will feel different for every body, so always listen closely to you body to find out what feels nice and what might feel like too much. Obviously you can always try any of the exercises listed for any emotions, but the categories are just what I have found work for me and for clients!

If you don’t recognize one of the exercises listed but are interested in trying it, check out my other guides for each of the categories. If you still have any questions about the strategies, please do not hesitate to contact me, even if you aren’t a current client.
